Welland outlasts Caledonia, 3-2

The game between the Welland Jr. Canadians and the Caledonia Corvairs was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Welland emerged with a 3-2 win.

The Jr. Canadians gained the winning advantage on a goal by Matt Cuglietta 18:42 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

Welland was paced by Cuglietta, who registered one goal and one assist.

The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 34 shots on Caledonia's net.

Welland also got points from JC Thivienge, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Adam Mataya also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Jack Fitzgerald and Matthew Mateljan, who each chipped in one.

The Corvairs did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Caledonia puts an average of 5.0 pucks into the net per game. The Corvairs' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Caledonia finished with 24 penalty minutes.

The Corvairs were helped by Connor Patton, who tallied one goal. Patton scored on the power play 15:43 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Caledonia earned a power play opportunity when Damien Lalonde was put in the box for tripping. Cody Brown picked up the assist. Caledonia also got a goal from Justin Abraham as well. Other players who recorded assists for Caledonia were Kyler Nixon, who had two.

Jeffrey Heartwell made 24 saves for Welland on 26 shots. The Jr. Canadians incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Colin Furlong rejected 31 shots on goal for the Corvairs. Caledonia registered two goals on four power play opportunities.
