Caledonia vanquishes Port Colborne in shootout, 5-4 (1-0 SO)Haldimand Center Sat, Nov 23, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Caledonia Corvairs defeated the Port Colborne Pirates in a shootout 5-4 (1-0 SO). The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.Caledonia saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Corvairs made the score 4-2 on a goal by Spencer Gourlay at 5:57 in the third period. Port Colborne evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by James Mewse-Detrich at 13:15 in the third period. In the losing effort, the Pirates were sparked by Charlie Izaguirre, who had two goals. Izaguirre scored the first of his two goals at 4:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Port Colborne. Brock Ackerman picked up the assist. Izaguirre's next tally made the score 4-3 Caledonia with 10:10 left in the third period. Cody Levasseur assisted on the tally. Caledonia forced Port Colborne goalie Mitchell Knight to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots. The Corvairs' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Caledonia gives up 1.9 goal per game. The Corvairs struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 24 penalty minutes for 11 opposing power plays. Caledonia was helped by Matt Quilty, who tallied one goal and one assist. Quilty scored 19:46 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Caledonia. Cody Brown picked up the assist. Caledonia additionally got points from Jeffrey Marlott, who also registered one goal and one assist. Jordan Peacock also scored for Caledonia. More assists for Caledonia came via Connor Murphy, Connor Patton, and Ryan Blunt, who contributed one a piece. The Pirates kept the Corvairs' goalie busy throughout the game, and Colin Furlong made 34 saves on 38 shots. Port Colborne also got points from Mewse-Detrich, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Port Colborne also got a goal from DYLAN BURDICK as well. Other players who recorded assists for Port Colborne were Spencer Fox and Liam VanBuren, who each chipped in one. Caledonia registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities. Knight rejected 34 shots on goal for Port Colborne. The Pirates incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
