Neuman leads Elmira to shutout victory over Stratford

Hayden Neuman was superb between the pipes for the Elmira Sugar Kings, as he did not allow a goal in a 2-0 victory over the Stratford Cullitons.

Elmira's penalty kill excelled, as the Sugar Kings gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

Elmira was paced by Brennon Pearce, who finished with one goal. Pearce scored on the power play 4:23 into the third period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. The Sugar Kings had gained a power play chance when Mitch Vandergunst was whistled for fighting. Craig Johnson picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 3:19 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Elmira penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The Sugar Kings had been averaging 32.0 minutes in penalties per game. Elmira stifled Stratford's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Sugar Kings' defensive play was more effective than usual against the Cullitons. Elmira gives up 2.1 goals on average per game. Stratford was unable to stop the Sugar Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Elmira eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

Jaden Goetz(APJ) also scored for Elmira. In addition, Elmira received assists from David Savery and Adam Brubacher, who contributed one a piece.

The Cullitons did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Stratford averages 3.4 goals per game. The Cullitons forced the Sugar Kings goalie Neuman to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

Neuman rejected 35 shots on goal for Elmira. The Sugar Kings registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Team's Justin Cooke and Austin Fischer were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Nick Caldwell recorded 32 saves for Stratford. The Cullitons ended with 24 minutes in penalty time with two minors and two majors. Stratford ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Vandergunst was ejected from the game.
