Guelph uses shootout to best Cambridge, 3-2 (3-2 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Guelph Hurricanes defeated the Cambridge Winter Hawks in a shootout 3-2 (3-2 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Cambridge got shootout goals from Alex Bottigoni and Adam Dauda. Guelph also got shootout goals from Ryan Migliaccio and Craig Martini.

The Hurricanes overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Guelph trailed 2-1 after a goal by the Winter Hawks' Hudson Michaelis at 13:52 in the second period. The Hurricanes tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Corey Flemington (APM) at 14:50 in the third period.

Cambridge's power play was ineffective against Guelph's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Hurricanes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Guelph's offense rang up 34 shots on the Winter Hawks' net.

The Hurricanes were helped by Matt Lippa, who had one goal. Lippa scored 5:59 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Jordan Hatzinger assisted on the tally. More assists for Guelph came via Patrick Kudla, who had one and Matt Nightingale, who had two.

Cambridge stifled Guelph's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Winter Hawks forced the Hurricanes goalie Stormer Santana to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. Cambridge struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 36 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

Matt Pinder also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Marcellis Subban, Kalob Witzell, Dauda, and Devin Shell, who contributed one a piece.

Santana recorded 34 saves for Guelph. The Hurricanes incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. Jacob Keogh made 31 saves for the Winter Hawks on 33 shots. For Cambridge, Cameron Pentsa was ejected from the game.
