St. Thomas survives Leamington comeback, wins 7-5

The St. Thomas Stars came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Leamington Flyers, but did just enough to escape with a 7-5 victory.

St. Thomas led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Stars' Spencer Hutchinson's scored at 19:33 in the third period to put St. Thomas up 8-5.

With three goals and three assists between them, Luc Knight and Alex Morgan teamed up to power the Stars' offense. Knight tallied one goal and three assists and Morgan also added two goals.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:18 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The St. Thomas penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The Stars surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Thomas forced Leamington goalie Trevor Wheaton to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. The Stars found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. St. Thomas averages 3.3 goals per game.

St. Thomas additionally got points from Brett Van Dusen, who also registered two goals and one assist and Chris Carreiro, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for St. Thomas came via Ryan Hamelin, who had two and Josh Slegers, Cam Garrow, Mitch Klie, Braden Hellems, and Josh Coyle(APM), who contributed one a piece.

The Stars were unable to stop the Flyers from sending pucks towards the net, and Leamington eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. The Flyers' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Leamington averages 2.2 goals allowed per game. The Flyers could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Leamington was helped by Dylan Seguin, who had two goals. Seguin scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:48 into the second period to make the score 3-2 St. Thomas. The Flyers had gained a power play chance when Carson Brookshaw was whistled for fighting. Chris Scott assisted on the tally. Seguin's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 St. Thomas with 19:09 left in the third period. Alex Seguin provided the assist. Leamington also got points from Scott, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Leamington also got a goal from Kyle Shaw as well. In addition, Leamington received assists from David Dalby, Jared Dennis, Cale Allen, and Kyle Quick, who each chipped in one.

Riley Brown rejected 36 shots on goal for St. Thomas. The Stars registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For St. Thomas, Morgan and Brookshaw were ejected from the contest. Wheaton recorded 36 saves for Leamington. The Flyers registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Ryan Muzzin, Jacob McGhee, and Allen were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
