Niagara Falls penalty kill dominates in 5-2 defeat of Thorold

The Niagara Falls Canucks, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Thorold Blackhawks' power play opportunities and emerged with a 5-2 victory.

Niagara Falls was led by Sean Farquharson, who had one goal. Farquharson scored 2:39 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Niagara Falls. Tory McLean provided the assist.

Thorold was unable to stop the Canucks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara Falls eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. The Canucks were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Niagara Falls also got points from Cole Vinnai, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Niagara Falls also got a goal from Garrett Gallardi as well. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from Johnny Curran, who had two and Marcus Michalski, Billy Saxton, and Denis Creighton, who each chipped in one.

The Blackhawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22.0 minutes per game Thorold had been spending in the box. The Blackhawks' offense operated below they season average. Thorold averages 5.3 goals per game. The Blackhawks forced Niagara Falls goalie Hunter Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 51 shots. Thorold was held back by its power play unit, which tallied one goal on nine chances.

The Blackhawks were helped by Brendan Cullen, who grabbed one goal. Cullen scored 3:45 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Thorold. Brady Allen assisted on the tally. Chris Goulet also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Matt Pizzo, Owen Sobchak, and Joe Mitchell, who contributed one a piece.

The Canucks' Johnson stopped 49 shots out of the 51 that he faced. Niagara Falls registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For the Canucks, Saxton was ejected from the game. Ian Shorthouse rejected 29 shots on goal for Thorold. Team's Jason Abbott and Francesco Gigliotti were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
