Welland penalty kill dominates in 7-3 defeat of Niagara Falls

The Niagara Falls Canucks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Welland Jr. Canadians shook off a number of penalties to win, 7-3.

Welland was sparked by Miller Hatten, who finished with one goal. Hatten scored 9:53 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Welland. Max Cipriano picked up the assist.

The Jr. Canadians' offense rang up 35 shots on Niagara Falls' net. Welland surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Jr. Canadians average 3.3 goals per contest.

Welland additionally got points from Adam Mataya, who also had one goal and two assists and Cole McKnight, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Welland included Brayden Stortz, who had one and Matthew Mateljan, who had three. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Jonathan Goldsworthy, Eric Cerino, Jack Fitzgerald, and Gabe Ruggi, who each chipped in one and Connor Walters and Damien Lalonde, who contributed two a piece.

The Canucks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 69 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 40.0 minutes per game Niagara Falls had been spending in the box. The Canucks forced Welland goalie Chris Janzen to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Niagara Falls was helped by Dylan Savory, who registered one goal. Savory scored on the power play 12:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Niagara Falls. A slashing penalty on Cipriano had put the Canucks on the power play. Garrett Gallardi provided the assist. Tory McLean also scored for Niagara Falls. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Chris Harpur, Mitch McIntosh, Cole Langan, Vito Scaringi, and Billy Saxton, who each chipped in one.

Chris Janzen made 31 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 34 shots. Welland totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 5-for-10 on the power play. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jason Lacroix was ejected from the game. Dylan Pietrangelo recorded 28 saves for Niagara Falls. The Canucks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Team's Langan and Denis Creighton were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
