Waterloo vanquishes Elmira in shootout, 6-5 (2-1 SO)Waterloo Rec Complex Sat, Nov 09, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Waterloo Siskins defeated the Elmira Sugar Kings in a shootout 6-5 (2-1 SO). The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout. Elmira got a shootout goal from Brad Kobryn. In addition to the clincher, Waterloo got a shootout goal from Nick Hirst.The Siskins saw a three-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Waterloo made the score 5-2 on a goal by Eric Cimino at 8:47 in the second period. The Sugar Kings evened things up at 5-5 on a goal by Adam Campagnolo at 19:34 in the third period. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:17 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The the Siskins penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. Waterloo surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Elmira was unable to stop the Siskins from sending pucks towards the net, and Waterloo eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. The Siskins surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Waterloo averages 3.6 goals per game. The Siskins' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in four goals. Waterloo also got a goal from Troy Lajeunesse as well. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Evan Kearns, Christian Mroczkowski, Evan Buehler, and Dalton Hnatko, who each chipped in one and Travis Harvey and Jarrett Parker, who contributed two a piece. The Sugar Kings were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 50 minutes in penalty time. Elmira had been averaging 32.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Sugar Kings kept Waterloo's goalie busy throughout the game, and Leo Lazarev made 39 saves on 44 shots. Elmira's normally stingy defense allowed more goals than usual. The Sugar Kings give up 2.2 goals per game. Elmira was helped by Mitch Wright, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Wright scored the first of his two goals at 4:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Elmira. Zac Coulter provided the assist. Wright's next tally made the score 5-4 Waterloo with 13:09 left in the third period. Kobryn assisted on the tally. Elmira also got points from Campagnolo, who also had two goals and one assist and Coulter, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Elmira came via David Savery, Adam Brubacher, Cass Frey, Jaden Goetz(APJ), and Brennon Pearce, who each chipped in one. The Siskins registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. For Waterloo, Thomas Carey and Connor Bodnar were ejected from the contest. Jonathan Reinhart rejected 30 shots on goal for the Sugar Kings. Elmira registered one goal on four power play opportunities. Team's Steven Jakiela, Pearce, and Matt Harding were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
