Welland uses early goal to top Buffalo, 2-0

Brayden Stortz scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Welland Jr. Canadians held off the challenges of the Buffalo Regals in a tough 2-0 win.

Welland took over the lead for good with a goal by Stortz at 19:06 in the first period. The Jr. Canadians had gotten the advantage when Buffalo's Ddomonic Gruttadauria AP was sent off for hooking. Eric Cerino provided the assist.

Stortz had two goals to lead Welland to victory.

Chris Janzen frustrated the Regals' offense all game, and stopped 25 shots en route to a shutout. Janzen managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.74 prior to the game.

The Jr. Canadians excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Welland kept Buffalo's goalie busy throughout the game, and Ian Sylves *AP made 39 saves on 41 shots. The Jr. Canadians could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game.

Jack Fitzgerald also scored for Welland. In addition, Welland received assists from Tanner Allen, Matt Martin-APM, and Gabe Ruggi, who contributed one a piece.

The Regals could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Buffalo puts an average of 2.3 pucks into the net per game. The Regals struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 34 penalty minutes for six opposing power plays.

Welland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and JC Thivienge was ejected from the game.
