London beats Leamington 6-4 after comeback scare

The Leamington Flyers tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the London Nationals held on for a 6-4 victory.

A goal by Ryan Tuffin put London up 6-3 in the third period, but Leamington pulled to within two on Dylan Seguin's tally 15:26 into the third period.

Jeff Bauer and Derek Todosichuk provided the spark for the Nationals, combining for one goal and eight assists. Bauer racked up one goal and four assists and Todosichuk also notched zero goals and four assists.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:11 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

London forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game the Nationals had been spending in the box.

London additionally got points from Ryan Wells, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Tristen Elie also scored for London. More assists for London came via Matt Fuller, Paul Hopkins, and Mark Gazdic, who contributed one a piece.

The Flyers' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Leamington gives up 2.0 goals per game. The Flyers were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 25 penalty minutes.

Leamington was led by David Dalby, who finished with two goals. Dalby scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 16:33 into the second period to make the score 4-2 London. A cross checking penalty on Matt Doty had put the Flyers on the power play. Kyle Shaw provided the assist. Dalby's next tally on the power play made the score 5-3 London with 15:23 left in the third period. Jacob McGhee assisted on the tally. Leamington also got a goal from Kyle Quick as well. Other players who recorded assists for Leamington were Ryan Muzzin, Nathan Opblinger, and Tony Spidalieri, who each chipped in one.

Liam Herbst rejected 20 shots on goal for London. The Nationals registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. For London, Chris Maton was ejected from the game. Leamington's Trevor Wheaton stopped 17 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Flyers registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Leamington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Blaine Bechard was ejected from the game.
