Brantford survives Guelph comeback, wins 5-3Sleeman Centre Sat, Oct 26, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Guelph Hurricanes tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Brantford 99ers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3. Brantford took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have Guelph storm back on a Matt Lippa goal 19:24 into the third period to pull to two goals down. The Hurricanes were doomed by their poor performance on special teams, as the 99ers were able to score four times while on the power play. Brantford bested its season scoring average. The 99ers average 2.4 goals per game. Brantford was helped by Nathan Bastian, who finished with one goal. Bastian scored 3:04 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Brantford. Mitch Atkins picked up the assist. Brantford also got points from Brandon Versamy, who also registered one goal and one assist. Scotty Penwarden also scored for Brantford. In addition, Brantford received assists from Cole Cummings, who had two and Anthony Van Looyen, Guy Polillo, Leonard Dziemianko, JJ Harland, and Keegan Alvestad, who contributed one a piece. Guelph's offense rang up 42 shots on the 99ers' net. The Hurricanes could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 50 minutes in penalties during the game. Guelph was helped by Brad Yowart, who had one goal. Yowart scored 9:17 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Brantford. Matt Marsden assisted on the tally. Guelph additionally got points from Chad Herron, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Guelph came via Lawrence Pagnan, Matt Nightingale, Sam Natale APJ, and Jordan Hatzinger, who each chipped in one. Brantford's Marcus Del Conte stopped 39 shots out of the 42 that he faced. The 99ers incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Brantford, David Storey and Polillo were ejected from the contest. Stormer Santana made 22 saves for the Hurricanes on 27 shots. Guelph registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Hurricanes, Lucas Pozzobon(APM) was ejected from the game.
