Welland rides Conway to victory over Port Colborne, 4-1

The Welland Jr. Canadians relied on the sparkling performance of Liam Conway in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Port Colborne Pirates.

Welland's penalty kill excelled, as the Jr. Canadians gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Welland was led by Jonathan Goldsworthy, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Goldsworthy scored on the power play 11:51 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Welland. A cross checking penalty on Mack Steele had put the Jr. Canadians on the power play. Patrick Desjardins provided the assist.

Welland's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Jr. Canadians finished with 34 penalty minutes.

Welland also got points from Matt Cuglietta, who also registered one goal and one assist and Matthew Mateljan, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Miller Hatten also scored for Welland. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Adam Mataya, Tanner Allen, and Adam Barron, who contributed one a piece.

Port Colborne was held below its usual level of production. The Pirates average 3.5 goals per game. Welland was unable to stop Port Colborne from sending pucks towards the net, and the Pirates eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Port Colborne found itself short handed often, totaling 50 penalty minutes and allowing nine power plays.

The Pirates were led by Cody Mintz, who scored the team's only goal. Mintz scored on the power play 12:50 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Port Colborne had gained a power play chance when Brayden Stortz was whistled for hooking. Jordan Bolibruck picked up the assist.

Liam Conway made 35 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 36 shots. Marcus Hlywka recorded 18 saves for the Pirates. Team's John DiLorenzo and Dakota Kingston were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
