Cambridge survives Stratford comeback, wins 5-3

The Stratford Cullitons tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Cambridge Winter Hawks held on for a 5-3 victory.

Cambridge took a 4-0 lead during the second period, only to have Stratford storm back on a Mitch Brooks goal 6:56 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Winter Hawks' offense rang up 33 shots on the Cullitons' net. Cambridge's power play unit failed to produce, and was held to zero goals on nine chances. The Winter Hawks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 38 penalty minutes.

Cambridge was helped by Matt Pinder, who grabbed one goal. Pinder scored 1:00 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge. Adam Dauda assisted on the tally. Jordan Chard also scored for Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Lucas Zitmanis, Jake Moggy, Cameron Pentsa, Tyler Peters, and Hudson Michaelis, who each chipped in one.

Stratford stifled the Winter Hawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Cambridge was unable to stop the Cullitons from sending pucks towards the net, and Stratford eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. The Cullitons could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Stratford was helped by Mitch Vandergunst, who racked up one goal. Vandergunst scored 19:39 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Cambridge. Tyson Baker picked up the assist. Stratford also got a goal from Brett Heaman as well. Other players who recorded assists for Stratford were Jake Pleon, Trevor Sauder, Ryker Killins, and Drew Gross, who contributed one a piece.

Jacob Keogh recorded 37 saves for the Winter Hawks. The Cullitons' Nick Caldwell stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Stratford registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. The Cullitons ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Pat McKelvie(APJ) was ejected from the game.
