Port Colborne uses shootout to best Thorold, 7-6 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Port Colborne Pirates defeated the Thorold Blackhawks in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured five attempts between both teams.

Port Colborne kept Thorold's goalie busy throughout the game, and Ian Shorthouse made 34 saves on 41 shots. The Pirates found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Port Colborne has scored at the pace of 3.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Pirates were led by Spencer Fox, who grabbed two goals. Fox scored the first of his two goals at 15:37 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Port Colborne. Evan Capobianco picked up the assist. Fox's next tally made the score 4-3 Port Colborne with 12:36 left in the second period. Jordan Bolibruck assisted on the tally. Port Colborne also got points from Cody Levasseur, who also had one goal and one assist and Mack Steele, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Port Colborne also got a goal from James Mewse-Detrich as well. In addition, Port Colborne received assists from Charlie Izaguirre, who had two and Trevor Smith and Brock Ackerman, who contributed one a piece.

The Blackhawks put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Port Colborne to score on any of its six power plays. The Pirates were unable to stop Thorold from sending pucks towards the net, and the Blackhawks eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

Thorold was helped by Zach McQuade, who registered two goals. McQuade scored the first of his two goals at 6:38 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Brady Allen picked up the assist. McQuade's next tally made the score 4-4 with 8:28 left in the second period. Allen assisted on the tally. Thorold additionally got points from Kevin Lavoie, who also grabbed one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Owen Sobchak, who also had two goals and one assist. Chris Goulet also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Matt Pizzo and Joe Mitchell, who each chipped in one.

Mitchell Knight recorded 25 saves for Port Colborne. The Pirates incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Blackhawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
