Niagara Falls erases deficit to stun Welland, 4-3

Undaunted by a three-goal deficit, the Niagara Falls Canucks battled back to claim a 4-3 victory over the Welland Jr. Canadians.

Niagara Falls never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Canucks trailed 3-0 after a power play goal by Welland's Jason Lacroix at 19:23 in the first period. Niagara Falls knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Mitch McIntosh at 2:14 in the third period. The Canucks netted the game winner on the power play at 9:24 in the third period on a goal by McIntosh.

Niagara Falls was led by Marcus Michalski, who registered one goal.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:25 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Canucks were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and one major for 75 minutes in penalty time. Niagara Falls had been averaging 44.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Canucks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara Falls eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

Niagara Falls also got points from Cole Vinnai, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Dylan Savory, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Niagara Falls came via Chris Harpur, who had one and Johnny Curran and Garrett Gallardi, who each chipped in two.

The Welland penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The Jr. Canadians surpassed its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. Welland forced the Canucks goalie Dylan Pietrangelo to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots. The Jr. Canadians were ineffective while on the power play, as they were held to two goals off of 18 man advantages.

Welland was helped by Brayden Stortz, who finished with two goals. Stortz scored the first of his two goals at 1:43 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. Connor Walters picked up the assist. Stortz's next tally made the score 2-0 Welland with 4:42 left in the first period. The Jr. Canadians had gained a power play chance when Curran was whistled for high sticking. Lacroix assisted on the tally. Welland additionally got points from Lacroix, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. In addition, Welland received assists from Gabe Ruggi, who had two and Eric Cerino and Matthew Mateljan, who contributed one a piece.

Niagara Falls' Pietrangelo stopped 41 shots out of the 44 that he faced. The Canucks registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For Niagara Falls, Tory McLean was ejected from the game. Liam Conway made 27 saves for Welland on 31 shots. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Patrick Desjardins was ejected from the game.
