Chatham survives Strathroy comeback, wins 7-5Chatham Memorial Arena Sun, Oct 13, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Chatham Maroons survived a determined comeback attempt by the Strathroy Rockets on the way to a 7-5 win. Chatham made the score 7-3 on a goal by Brayden Hopkins at 8:24 in the third period, and Strathroy got as close as 7-5 when Nick Boyer scored 10:10 into the third period. The Maroons were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. Chatham surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. The Maroons forced the Rockets' netminders to work without much rest, ripping 50 shots and forcing 43 saves. PJ Bridges made 29 stops and Tynan Lauziere made 14. Chatham surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Maroons average 4.6 goals per game. Chatham was helped by Hayden Verbeek, who finished with one goal and two assists. Verbeek scored 7:48 into the third period to make the score 6-3 Chatham. Steven Szekesy assisted on the tally. Chatham also got points from Kyle Brothers, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Hopkins, who also racked up two goals and one assist, Michael Verboom, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Eric Palazzolo, who also finished with one goal and one assist. James McEwen (APM) also scored for Chatham. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Trevor Richardson, Ben Pataki, Nate Pietens, Connor Doran, and Mark Fratarcangelli, who contributed one a piece. The Maroons were unable to stop Strathroy from sending pucks towards the net, and the Rockets eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. Strathroy was led by Brett Dalton, who registered one goal and two assists. Dalton scored on the power play 6:43 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Chatham. The Rockets earned a power play opportunity when Verbeek was put in the box for slashing. Tony Belony provided the assist. Strathroy additionally got points from Belony, who also had one goal and one assist. Strathroy also got a goal from Mike Mandarelli as well. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Andrew Martin, Max Naus, and Jack Van Boekel, who each chipped in one and Tyler Duarte and Shawn Grogan, who contributed two a piece. Darien Ekblad recorded 36 saves for Chatham. The Maroons registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. For Chatham, Pataki and Brothers were ejected from the contest.
