Waterloo beats Listowel 6-0 as Lazarev gains shutout

Leo Lazarev recorded a shutout against the Listowel Cyclones as the Waterloo Siskins picked up a 6-0 win.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 1:42 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Waterloo was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Siskins surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Waterloo made Listowel's netminders to work without much rest, firing 45 shots and forcing 39 saves. Daniel Dekoning made 27 stops and Tanner Topham made 12. The Siskins' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Listowel power plays. Waterloo's defensive play was more effective than usual against the Cyclones. The Siskins average 2.8 goals allowed per game. Waterloo bested its season scoring average. This season, the Siskins average 3.6 goals per contest. Waterloo's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

The Siskins were helped by Andrew Brubacher, who registered one goal and two assists. Brubacher scored 4:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo. Matt Sheick assisted on the tally. Waterloo also got points from Christian Mroczkowski, who also had one goal and one assist and Sheick, who also racked up two goals and two assists to lead the team in points. Waterloo also got a goal from Luke Gazzola as well. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Nick Hirst, who had two, Thomas Carey, who had three, and Eric Cimino and Troy Lajeunesse, who each chipped in one.

Listowel racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 15 minors and one major for 55 minutes in penalty time. The Cyclones had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. Listowel was held below its usual level of production. The Cyclones put an average of 3.1 pucks into the net per game.

Lazarev recorded 29 saves for Waterloo. The Siskins registered three goals on 10 power play opportunities. Waterloo ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Mah was ejected from the game. For Listowel, Dylan Sayles was ejected from the game.
