Kitchener beats Stratford 4-3 after comeback scare

The Stratford Cullitons tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Kitchener Dutchmen held on for a 4-3 victory.

A goal by Adam Kawelic(APM) put Kitchener up 4-2 in the third period, but Stratford pulled to within one on Ryker Killins's tally 8:48 into the third period.

The Dutchmen were sparked by Kawelic(APM), who had one goal. Kawelic(APM) scored 6:15 into the third period to make the score Kitchener.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 16:50 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Kitchener forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The Dutchmen surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Team could not crack the Cullitons' penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having nine opportunities to play with the man advantage.

Kitchener additionally got points from Brett Clampitt, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Keegan Calder also scored for Kitchener. Other players who recorded assists for Kitchener were Alex Demrovsky, Taite Wirschke (APM), and Keli Grant, who each chipped in one.

The Stratford penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. The Cullitons had been averaging 29.0 minutes in penalties per game.

Stratford was helped by Dylan Wettlaufer, who tallied two goals. Wettlaufer scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:37 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kitchener. A cross checking penalty on Jordan Delaurier had put the Cullitons on the power play. Pat McKelvie(APJ) assisted on the tally. Wettlaufer's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 14:55 left in the second period. Stratford had taken the advantage when Kitchener's Clampitt got sent off for high sticking. McKelvie(APJ) picked up the assist. Stratford also got points from Killins, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. More assists for Stratford came via Jordan Currie and O Brien Shane, who contributed one a piece.

The Dutchmen's Marc Williams stopped 27 shots out of the 30 that he faced. For Kitchener, Demrovsky was ejected from the game. Nick Caldwell made 24 saves for the Cullitons on 28 shots. Stratford registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. The Cullitons ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Maverick Petrie was ejected from the game.
