Leamington takes care of St. Thomas early, wins 8-1

The St. Thomas Stars fell behind early, and the Leamington Flyers kept piling on the points on the way to an 8-1 victory.

St. Thomas was stymied by Leamington netminder Trevor Wheaton, who stopped 30 shots during the victory. Wheaton certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.16 entering the contest.

Mitchell Amante had a great game for the Flyers, netting two goals. Amante's tallies came at 2:58 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Leamington and 16:35 into the second to make the score 6-0 Leamington.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:56 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Leamington penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 38 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Leamington forced the Stars' netminders to work in net, getting 42 shots and forcing 34 saves. Jackson McIntosh made 34 stops and Riley Brown made zero. The Flyers found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Leamington averages 5.0 goals per game. The defensemen of the Flyers were also effective in St. Thomas' zone, and came away with two goals.

Leamington also got points from Kyle Shaw, who also racked up one goal and two assists, Alex Seguin, who also finished with one goal and two assists, Chris Scott, who also tallied one goal and two assists, and Kyle Quick, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Leamington also got a goal from Daniel Robertson as well. More assists for Leamington came via Jacob McGhee, Nicklas Pleshakov, and Nathan Opblinger, who each chipped in one.

The Stars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and three majors for 35 minutes in penalty time. St. Thomas surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. The Stars forced Leamington goalie Wheaton to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots.

Cam Garrow also scored for St. Thomas.

The Flyers registered two goals on four power play opportunities. For Leamington, Blaine Bechard and Jared Dennis were ejected from the contest. St. Thomas registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Team's Ryan Hamelin, Austin Ullet, and Josh Coyle(APM) were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
