Thorold penalty kill dominates in 4-1 defeat of Buffalo

The Thorold Blackhawks, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Buffalo Regals' power play opportunities and emerged with a 4-1 victory.

Thorold was sparked by Kyle Tanev, who had one goal. Tanev scored 11:26 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Thorold. Tyler Kessler assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:22 into the third period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Blackhawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. Thorold surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Buffalo was unable to stop the Blackhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

Thorold additionally got points from Chris Goulet, who also registered one goal and one assist, Joe Mitchell, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Michael Sharpe, who also racked up one goal and one assist.

The Regals racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Buffalo had been spending in the box.

The Regals were led by Michael Faliero, who scored the team's only goal. Faliero scored on the power play 17:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Buffalo. Buffalo had taken the advantage when the Blackhawks' Drake Hart got sent off for boarding. Christopher Moses provided the assist.

Thorold's Brendan Polasek stopped 22 shots out of the 23 that he faced. The Blackhawks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For Thorold, Nick Sacco and Zach McQuade were ejected from the contest. Ian Sylves *AP made 34 saves for the Regals on 38 shots. Buffalo registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. Team's Jordan Matos and Kennedy Monaco were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
