St. Catharines beats Thorold 6-5 after comeback scare

The Thorold Blackhawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the St. Catharines Falcons would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-5.

A goal by Kyle Woodhouse put St. Catharines up 5-2 in the second period, but Thorold pulled to within one on Zach McQuade's tally 16:24 into the third period.

Yanni Rallis and Tyler Jackson provided the spark for the Falcons, combining for three goals and three assists. Rallis registered one goal and two assists and Jackson also notched two goals and one assist.

St. Catharines excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Falcons forced the Blackhawks goalie Ian Shorthouse to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots.

St. Catharines also got points from Woodhouse, who also racked up two goals and one assist, Jackson, who also registered two goals and one assist, and Aaron Taylor, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. In addition, St. Catharines received assists from Ryan Doucette, who had one and Dilan Walker and Brennan Feasey, who contributed two a piece.

Thorold was led by Owen Sobchak, who finished with two goals. Sobchak scored the first of his two goals at 21 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-1 Thorold. Roger Sherwood assisted on the tally. Sobchak's next tally made the score 5-5 with 2:01 left in the third period. Kevin Lavoie provided the assist. Thorold additionally got points from Drake Hart, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Tyler Kessler also scored for Thorold. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Christian Difelice, Joe Mitchell, and Kyle Sarris, who each chipped in one.

Knick Dawe made 25 saves for St. Catharines on 30 shots. The Falcons incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors. For St. Catharines, Woodhouse was ejected from the game. Shorthouse recorded 26 saves for the Blackhawks. Thorold incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
