Mitchell's big game bests Fort Erie in 9-4 Thorold win

Joe Mitchell had one goal and four assists to lead the Thorold Blackhawks to a 9-4 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors.

Mitchell beat Connor Visca with a shot 6:52 into the second period to make the score 3-3. Roger Sherwood picked up the assist. Mitchell dished an assist on Kevin Lavoie's goal that made the score 2-2 at 34 seconds into the second period. He then added assists on Owen Sobchak's goal at 13:38 into the second, on Drake Hart's goal at 6:41 into the third, and on Sherwood's goal at 18:13 into the third.

Thorold's penalty kill excelled, as the Blackhawks gave up one goal despite allowing eight power plays.

Thorold's offense rang up 42 shots on Fort Erie's net. The Blackhawks bested their season scoring average. This season, Thorold averages 6.2 goals per contest.

Thorold also got points from Sobchak, who also registered one goal and one assist, Hart, who also grabbed one goal and five assists, and Sherwood, who also finished with three goals and three assists to lead the team in points. Kyle Tanev also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Michael Sharpe, who had one and Chris Goulet, who had three.

The Meteors were led by Jesse Pereira, who had one goal and one assist. Pereira scored 4:35 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Fort Erie. Jared Marino assisted on the tally. Fort Erie also got a goal from Nigel Slade as well. Other players who recorded assists for Fort Erie were Richard DeMarco and Carson Johnstone, who each chipped in one and Nicolas Giancola and Kyle Marino, who contributed two a piece.

Ian Shorthouse rejected 26 shots on goal for the Blackhawks. Thorold incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Fort Erie's Visca stopped 33 shots out of the 42 that he faced. The Meteors incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Fort Erie ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Sam Quaranta was ejected from the game.
