GAME RECAP

Furlong leads Caledonia to shutout victory over Port Colborne

Vale Center    Fri, Sep 27, 2013

Colin Furlong recorded a shutout against the Port Colborne Pirates as the Caledonia Corvairs picked up a 1-0 win.

Spencer Gourlay's game-winning tally was the game's only goal. It came at 19:00 in the third period. Justin Abraham assisted on the tally.

Port Colborne's power play was ineffective against Caledonia's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Corvairs put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Pirates to score on any of their seven power plays. Caledonia did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Corvairs put an average of 5.6 pucks into the net per game. Port Colborne was unable to stop Caledonia from sending pucks towards the net, and the Corvairs eventually piled up 45 shots on goal. Caledonia could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.

In addition, Caledonia received assists from Connor Murphy, who had one.

The Pirates' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Caledonia power plays. Port Colborne was held below its usual level of production. The Pirates average 3.3 goals per game.

Colin Furlong made 25 saves for the Corvairs on 25 shots. Mitchell Knight recorded 44 saves for Port Colborne. The Pirates incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
