St. Catharines vanquishes Ancaster in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the St. Catharines Falcons defeated the Ancaster Avalanche in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams.

Mark Rodgers was all over the ice for St. Catharines, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Rodgers found the back of the net 3:28 into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Catharines and again while on the power play 32 seconds into the second to make the score 2-1 St. Catharines.

Ancaster's power play was ineffective against the Falcons' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:58 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

St. Catharines was often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Falcons surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. St. Catharines kept the Avalanche's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeremy Currie made 32 saves on 35 shots.

More assists for St. Catharines came via Dilan Walker, who had two and Yanni Rallis and Mitch Bursey, who contributed one a piece.

Ancaster could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Avalanche put an average of 5.0 pucks into the net per game. Ancaster struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 31 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

The Avalanche were helped by Ryan Lewis, who had one goal. Lewis scored 6:20 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Eric Eustace provided the assist. Max Balinson also scored for Ancaster. Other players who recorded assists for Ancaster were Blake Luscombe, Michael Pollice, and Zach Niemanen, who each chipped in one.

Stormer Santana rejected 13 shots on goal for the Falcons. St. Catharines ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brad Col was ejected from the game. For Ancaster, Hayden Guitard was ejected from the game.
