Mataya's big game bests Buffalo in 9-2 Welland win

Adam Mataya had two goals and three assists to lead the Welland Jr. Canadians to a 9-2 victory over the Buffalo Regals.

Mataya scored at 5:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland and again while 7:47 into the second to make the score 5-2 Welland.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:00 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Welland stifled Buffalo's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Welland averages 4.2 goals per game.

Welland additionally got points from Matthew Mateljan, who also registered three goals and one assist and Tyler Stranges, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Welland also got a goal from Tanner Allen as well. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Christian DiFonzo, Max Cipriano, Adam Barron, Liam Conway, Damien Lalonde, and Brayden Stortz, who each chipped in one and Jack Fitzgerald, Patrick Desjardins, and Gabe Ruggi, who contributed two a piece.

The Regals excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Buffalo was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 24 penalty minutes.

The Regals were helped by Colton Anstey, who finished with one goal. Anstey scored 6:13 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Christopher Moses picked up the assist. Buffalo also got points from Moses, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Buffalo came via Jake Battistoni, Ryan Cox, and Luke Meyer, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians' Chris Janzen stopped 14 shots out of the 16 that he faced. Welland ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Jr. Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Stortz was ejected from the game. Matthew Goss made 13 saves for Buffalo on 22 shots. The Regals registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. For Buffalo, Taggart Ledyard and Gary Seitz were ejected from the contest.
