Port Colborne falls apart in second, loses to Caledonia, 7-2

The Caledonia Corvairs used a four-goal second period to put away the Port Colborne Pirates, 7-2.

Mitch Brown was all over the ice for Caledonia, as he had two goals in the win. Brown scored at 3:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Caledonia and again while 12:04 into the first to make the score 2-0 Caledonia.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 3:51 into the second period. Three fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The the Corvairs penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 13 minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 37.0 minutes per game Caledonia had been spending in the box. Port Colborne was unable to stop the Corvairs from sending pucks towards the net, and Caledonia eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

Caledonia also got points from Spencer Gourlay, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Connor Murphy, who also racked up two goals and two assists, and Connor Patton, who also tallied two goals and two assists. More assists for Caledonia came via Justin Abraham and Jeffrey Marlott, who contributed one a piece and Ryan Moran, Kyler Nixon, and Matt Quilty, who each chipped in two.

The Pirates were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and one major for 45 minutes in penalty time. Port Colborne had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Pirates were led by Mack Steele, who registered two goals. Steele scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:33 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Caledonia. A unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Scott Dorian had put Port Colborne on the power play. Liam VanBuren provided the assist. Steele's next tally on the power play made the score 7-2 Caledonia with 1:48 left in the third period. The Pirates had gained a power play chance when Dorian was whistled for head contact. Jordan Bolibruck picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Port Colborne were Charlie Izaguirre, who had one.

Colin Furlong recorded 28 saves for the Corvairs. Caledonia registered three goals on 13 power play opportunities. For the Corvairs, Jonathan Brier was ejected from the game. Marcus Hlywka made 38 saves for Port Colborne on 45 shots. The Pirates registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Port Colborne ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dylan Laird was ejected from the game.
