Welland squeaks by Fort Erie, 4-2Fort Erie Leisureplex Sat, Sep 14, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Welland Jr. Canadians escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Brayden Stortz secured the win for Welland with a goal in the third period. Fort Erie's power play was ineffective against the Jr. Canadians' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded. Welland was led by Stortz, who finished with one goal. Stortz scored 15:06 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Welland. Tyler Stranges assisted on the tally. The Jr. Canadians stifled the Meteors' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Welland also got points from Adam Mataya, who also had one goal and one assist and Matthew Mateljan, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Welland also got a goal from Connor Walters as well. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Eric Cerino, Gabe Ruggi, and Christian Lea, who contributed one a piece. Fort Erie forced Welland goalie Liam Conway to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Meteors were helped by Jesse Pereira, who racked up one goal. Pereira scored 4:00 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Welland. Jacob Toppazzini picked up the assist. Josh Micallef also scored for Fort Erie. In addition, Fort Erie received assists from Austin Carroll, Mike Boles, and Richard DeMarco, who each chipped in one. Conway rejected 34 shots on goal for the Jr. Canadians. Welland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Fort Erie's Josh Rosettani stopped 16 shots out of the 20 that he faced. The Meteors incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
