Elmira's comeback falls short, Listowel wins 4-3

The Listowel Cyclones came close to giving away a four-goal lead to the Elmira Sugar Kings, but did just enough to escape with a 4-3 victory.

Listowel led by four goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Cyclones' Scott Pawson's scored on the power play at 3:40 in the second period to put Listowel up 5-1.

Kevin Gergley had four goals to lead the Cyclones to victory. Gergley's first goal came 1:12 into the first period. He then added goals at 4:45 into the first, at 11:09 into the first, and at 11:42 into the first.

Listowel forced Elmira goalie Jonathan Reinhart to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. The Cyclones were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 31 penalty minutes. Listowel was held back by its power play unit, which tallied one goal on nine chances.

Listowel additionally got points from Pawson, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. More assists for Listowel came via Mac Nichol, who had two and Blake Nichol, Tanner Mighton, and Nick Arcan, who each chipped in one.

The Sugar Kings was not heavily penalized during the game, and finished with 11 minors and one major totalling 27 minutes. Elmira stayed under its season average of 40.0 penalties minutes per game this season. The Cyclones were unable to stop the Sugar Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Elmira eventually piled up 44 shots on goal. The Sugar Kings had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on 10 chances.

Elmira was led by Brett Parsons, who grabbed one goal. Parsons scored on the power play 11:49 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Listowel. A cross checking penalty on Tim Nauta had put the Sugar Kings on the power play. Brodie Whitehead picked up the assist. Elmira also got a goal from David Savery as well. In addition, Elmira received assists from Craig Johnson, Adam Brubacher, Rob Kohli, and Zac Coulter, who contributed one a piece.

Tanner Topham recorded 41 saves for Listowel. For the Cyclones, Nichol and Derek Elliot were ejected from the contest. Elmira's Reinhart stopped 34 shots out of the 38 that he faced. The Sugar Kings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Steven Jakiela was ejected from the game.
