Verboom leads Chatham over London, 9-2

The Chatham Maroons' Michael Verboom had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing three assists in his team's 9-2 win over the London Nationals.

Verboom got on the board by slotting home a short handed goal 6:59 into the second period to make the score 2-2. A boarding call on Hayden Verbeek put Chatham on the penalty kill. Nate Pietens provided the assist. Verboom dished an assist on Trevor Richardson's goal that made the score 4-2 Chatham at 10:03 into the second period. He then added assists on Richardson's goal at 13:19 into the second and on Matthew Kenney's goal at 5:00 into the third.

The Maroons' penalty kill excelled, as Chatham gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:43 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Maroons forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game Chatham had been spending in the box. The Maroons forced London's goaltenders to work all game long, firing 52 shots and forcing 43 saves. Nick Dampier made 26 stops and Connor Hughes made 17. Chatham surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Maroons average 4.4 goals per contest.

Chatham additionally got points from Richardson, who also finished with three goals and one assist and Verbeek, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Chatham also got a goal from Connor Annett as well. In addition, Chatham received assists from Steven Szekesy and Oliver Blayne, who contributed one a piece and Kyle Brothers, Brayden Hopkins, and Eric Palazzolo, who each chipped in two.

Chatham was unable to stop the Nationals from sending pucks towards the net, and London eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

The Nationals were helped by Matt Wildman, who grabbed one goal. Wildman scored on the power play 16:18 into the first period to make the score 2-1 London. London had gained a power play chance when Ben Pataki was whistled for tripping. Jonathan Sims assisted on the tally. Kyle L Robinson also scored for London. Other players who recorded assists for London were Matt Doty, who had one.

Darien Ekblad rejected 31 shots on goal for the Maroons. Chatham registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Pietens and Palazzolo were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Nationals ended with 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and two majors. For London, Ryan Wells and Scott Lombardi were ejected from the contest.
