Guelph vanquishes Listowel in shootout, 4-3 (2-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Guelph Hurricanes defeated the Listowel Cyclones in a shootout 4-3 (2-0 SO).

The shootout featured four attempts between both teams. In addition to the clincher, Guelph got a shootout goal from Matt Lippa.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 10:28 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Hurricanes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Guelph kept Listowel's goalie busy throughout the game, and Tanner Topham made 32 saves on 36 shots.

The Hurricanes were helped by Chad Herron, who had one goal and one assist. Herron scored 10:58 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Craig Martini assisted on the tally. Guelph also got points from Martini, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Matt Nightingale also scored for Guelph. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Lawrence Pagnan, Lippa, Dustin Scheer, and Lucas Pozzobon(APM), who contributed one a piece.

The Cyclones forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Listowel surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. The Cyclones put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Guelph to score on any of its nine power plays. Listowel forced the Hurricanes goalie Bradley Van Schubert to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots.

The Cyclones were led by Ben Shelley, who had one goal and one assist. Shelley scored short handed 18:41 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Listowel. Listowel played down a man on Scott Pawson's tripping. Others who scored for Listowel included Brandon Preistap and Kevin Gergley, who each put in one.

Van Schubert rejected 36 shots on goal for Guelph. The Hurricanes ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For Guelph, Sebastian Stangherlin was ejected from the game. Team's Connor Shaw and Tim Nauta were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
