Allen uses shootout to best Arizona, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Kale Kerbashian netted the deciding goal for the Allen Americans in the shootout as Americans prevailed over the Arizona Sundogs, 4-3 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed nine turns to complete the shootout. Arizona's shootout goal was scored by Kevin Baker. Allen's other shootout goal was scored by Darryl Bootland.

The Americans came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Allen trailed 3-2 after a goal by the Sundogs' David Rutherford at 2:54 in the third period. The Americans knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Brian McMillin at 12:22 in the third period.

Alex Lavoie was all over the ice for Allen, as he had two goals in the win. Lavoie found the back of the net 4:16 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 1:49 into the third to make the score 2-2.

The Americans forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. Allen surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. The Americans' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Arizona power plays. By firing 40 shots on goal, Allen exceeded the 29.6 shots it averages per game this year.

More assists for Allen came via Jonathan Lessard, who had two and Tyler Ludwig, Gregor Hanson, Garrett Klotz, and Jamie Schaafsma, who contributed one a piece.

Arizona racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The Sundogs had been averaging 22.0 minutes in penalties per game. Arizona stifled the Americans' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. With 39 shots on target during the contest, the Sundogs exceeded the 26.6 shots they average per game this year.

Others who scored for Arizona included Johan Ryd and Paul McIlveen, who scored one goal each. In addition, Arizona received assists from Brandon Coccimiglio, who had two and Jason Morgan and Sebastien Geoffrion, who each chipped in one.

Allen's Mark Guggenberger stopped 36 shots out of the 39 that he faced. The Americans registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Andrew Engelage made 36 saves for Arizona on 39 shots.
