Wheatley beats Dresden 6-5 after comeback scareWheatley Area Arena Mon, Oct 21, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Dresden Kings tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Wheatley Sharks held on for a 6-5 victory. A goal by Cale Phibbs put Wheatley up 6-2 in the third period, but Dresden pulled to within one on Derek Daly's tally 16:26 into the third period. The Sharks forced the Kings goalie Brent Paxton to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots. Wheatley's penalty kill unit could not stop Dresden's power play, which converted on four of four opportunities. Wheatley also got a goal from Jimmy Ciacelli as well. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Jon Woelk, who had three and Dylan Impens, Thomas Virban, and Antonio Ciampa, who each chipped in one. The Kings put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Sharks to score on any of their five power plays. Dresden's goal total was higher than its season average. This season, the Kings average 2.7 goals per contest. Dresden was led by Macks Holmes, who finished with two goals and one assist. Holmes scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:27 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Dresden. The Kings had taken the advantage when Wheatley's Phibbs got sent off for slashing. Wade Esselman provided the assist. Holmes' next tally on the power play made the score 4-2 Wheatley with 15:14 left in the third period. Taylor Sisson assisted on the tally. Kevin Ritzer also scored for Dresden. More assists for Dresden came via Josh Clements and Dede Cato, who contributed one a piece. The Sharks' Everitt Omstead stopped 21 shots out of the 26 that he faced. Wheatley ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. The Sharks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Austin Fontaine was ejected from the game. Paxton rejected 33 shots on goal for Dresden. The Kings incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors. |
