Vokes nets hat trick, leads Alvinston to 5-2 win over Wallaceburg

Sam Vokes lifted the Alvinston Flyers to a 5-2 victory with a hat trick against the Wallaceburg Lakers.

Vokes' first goal came 16:04 into the first period. He then added goals at 5:35 into the third and at 17:25 into the third.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 14:28 into the second period. Fourteen fighting penalties were dished out along with 13 game misconducts.

Alvinston racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and four majors for 46 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. Alvinston forced Lakers' goalies to work without much rest, totaling 38 shots and forcing 33 saves. Joel Sowinski made 17 stops and Wesley Hughson made 16.

Alvinston additionally got points from Tyler Kettler, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Alvinston also got a goal from Joe Archer as well. Other players who recorded assists for Alvinston were Sam MacGee, who had two and Dylan Ryan, Dan Warner, Cody Perriam, Dylan Lightfoot, and Kole Keating, who each chipped in one.

Wallaceburg forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up four minors and three majors for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Lakers had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. Wallaceburg forced the Flyers goalie James Morreau to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Lakers were helped by Evan Weidenback, who tallied one goal. Weidenback scored on the power play 14:58 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Alvinston. Wallaceburg earned a power play opportunity when Perriam was put in the box for fighting (aggressor). Connor Johnston assisted on the tally. Robert Danyo also scored for Wallaceburg. In addition, Wallaceburg received assists from Lucais Meyskens, Mike Kindarachok, and DJ Sapone, who contributed one a piece.

Morreau rejected 32 shots on goal for Alvinston. The Flyers registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For Alvinston, Perriam, Jeremy VanDeven, Keating, and Chad Rainsberry were ejected from the contest. The Lakers registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Team's Justin Whitson, Ryan Chovich, Danyo, and Sowinski were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
