Brault nets hat trick, leads Lakefield to 7-1 win over Clarington

A hat trick by Travis Brault was the highlight in Chiefs' 7-1 win against the Clarington Eagles.

Brault got on the scoresheet 3:33 into the first period. He then added goals at 9:57 into the first and at 19:11 into the first.

The Lakefield Chiefs led 6-0 after the opening frame the first period and maintained a healthy margin after.

Clarington's power play was ineffective against Lakefield's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:41 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Chiefs were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. Lakefield had been averaging 28.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Chiefs stifled the Eagles' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Lakefield additionally got points from Jordan Walsh, who also grabbed two goals and one assist and Nathan Larson, who also had one goal and two assists. Ryan Saunders also scored for Lakefield. More assists for Lakefield came via Derek Manley, who had two, Eric Oosting, who had three, and Gregory Jesse and Keenan Runnalis, who each chipped in one.

Clarington put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Lakefield to score on any of its three power plays. The Eagles did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Clarington puts an average of 3.9 pucks into the net per game.

The Chiefs' Zach Wainman stopped 24 shots out of the 25 that he faced. For Lakefield, Josh Duggan was ejected from the game. Connor Visca made 22 saves for the Eagles on 29 shots. Clarington ended with 55 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Eagles ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Brad Down was ejected from the game.
