Lakefield uses shootout to best Little Britain, 6-5 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Lakefield Chiefs defeated the Little Britain Merchants in a shootout 6-5 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Little Britain got a shootout goal from Kurtis Moore. In addition to the clincher, Lakefield got a shootout goal from Derek Manley.

The Chiefs came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. Lakefield was down 4-0 after a power play goal by the Merchants' Terry Snodden at 19:36 in the first period. The Chiefs knotted things up at 5-5 on a goal by Devin Gilbert at 19:44 in the second period.

Lakefield was led by Manley, who grabbed one goal. Manley scored 7:22 into the second period to make the score 4-4. Gregory Jesse assisted on the tally.

The Chiefs were often in penalty trouble, totaling 17 minors and one major for 69 minutes in penalty time. Lakefield had been averaging 34.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Chiefs kept Little Britain's goalie busy throughout the game, and Garrett Haden made 33 saves on 39 shots. Lakefield was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on 12 chances.

Lakefield also got points from Connor Blair, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Lakefield also got a goal from Keenan Runnalis as well. In addition, Lakefield received assists from Nathan Larson, who had two and Eric Shewell and Eric Oosting, who contributed one a piece.

The Merchants forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 17 minors and one major for 69 minutes in penalty time. Little Britain surpassed its season average of 33.0 penalty minutes per game. The Merchants' goal total was higher than their season average. Little Britain averages 2.8 goals per game.

The Merchants were helped by Moore, who racked up two goals and one assist. Moore scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Little Britain. Little Britain had gained a power play chance when Larson was whistled for interference. Jesse Craig AP picked up the assist. Moore's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Little Britain with 1:12 left in the second period. The Merchants had taken the advantage when the Chiefs' Shewell got sent off for holding. Snodden provided the assist. Little Britain additionally got points from Snodden, who also had two goals and one assist. Nate Huhges also scored for Little Britain. Other players who recorded assists for Little Britain were Brett Doble, who had three.

Kevin Collins made 22 saves for Lakefield on 27 shots. For the Chiefs, Gilbert was ejected from the game. Little Britain registered three goals on 12 power play opportunities. The Merchants ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Aidan Renouf was ejected from the game.
