Newmarket squeaks by Burlington, 5-4

The Newmarket Hurricanes gutted out a close 5-4 win against the Burlington Cougars.

No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Ian Farrell at 17:21 of the third period.

Trevor Petersen and Farrell provided the spark for Newmarket, combining for three goals and one assist. Petersen grabbed two goals and Farrell also added one goal and one assist.

The Hurricanes made Cougars' goaltenders to work in net, racking up 44 shots and forcing 39 saves. Jeremy Currie made 19 stops and Josh Morton made 20.

Newmarket also got points from Brandon Francisco, who also registered one goal and one assist and Farrell, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Adam Smith also scored for Newmarket. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Kyle Stephan, Curtis Harvey, Sam Hu, Christian Dedonato, Jesse Saban, Taylor Joseph, Nik Coric, and Justin Maiolino, who contributed one a piece.

Newmarket was unable to stop Burlington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cougars eventually piled up 38 shots on goal.

Burlington was led by Paolo DeSousa, who finished with two goals. DeSousa scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:33 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Cougars had gained a power play chance when Dedonato was whistled for hooking. Wyatt Trainer picked up the assist. DeSousa's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Burlington with 13:49 left in the second period. Others who scored for Burlington included Derek Rotter and Daniel Campbell, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Burlington were Viktor Meuller, who had two and Neil Aird, Nathan Tandan, and Brad Johnson, who each chipped in one.

Bo Bessette rejected 34 shots on goal for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors. Burlington incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors.
