Whitby vanquishes Toronto Lakeshore in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Whitby Fury defeated the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed eight turns to complete the shootout.

Whitby overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Fury trailed 2-1 after a goal by Toronto Lakeshore's Doug Bonar at 9:07 in the third period. Whitby tied things up at 2-2 on a goal by Taylor Best at 12:55 in the third period.

The Fury's offense rang up 45 shots on the Patriots' net.

Whitby was helped by Jeremy Wu, who tallied one goal. Wu scored 4:46 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Best provided the assist. Whitby additionally got points from Best, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Whitby came via Mike Panowyk and Greg Milner, who each chipped in one.

Toronto Lakeshore's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Whitby power plays.

The Patriots were helped by Kevin Shier, who finished with one goal. Shier scored on the power play 2:45 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toronto Lakeshore. Toronto Lakeshore had taken the advantage when the Fury's Sean Deroch got sent off for holding. Bonar picked up the assist. Toronto Lakeshore also got points from Bonar, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Toronto Lakeshore received assists from Tyler Currie, Andreas Tsogkas, and Robert Powers, who contributed one a piece.

Whitby's Boyd Diclemente stopped 22 shots out of the 24 that he faced. The Fury incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Evan Buitenhuis made 42 saves for the Patriots on 44 shots. Toronto Lakeshore incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Patriots ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tsogkas was ejected from the game.
