Newmarket survives Hamilton comeback, wins 6-5

The Newmarket Hurricanes survived a determined comeback attempt by the Hamilton Red Wings on the way to a 6-5 win.

A goal by Nik Coric put Newmarket up 6-3 in the second period, but Hamilton pulled to within one on Niko Porikos's tally 10:16 into the third period.

The Hurricanes pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 15 penalty minutes.

Newmarket kept the Red Wings' goalie busy throughout the game, and Mark Sinclair made 34 saves on 40 shots. The Hurricanes surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Newmarket has scored at the pace of 3.8 goals per game during the current campaign.

The Hurricanes were helped by Brycin Morrison, who tallied two goals. Morrison scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. Newmarket earned a power play opportunity when Mitch Reid was put in the box for goalie interference. Brandon Francisco provided the assist. Morrison's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Newmarket with 2:46 left in the first period. Francisco picked up the assist. Newmarket also got points from Anthony Trujillo, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Justin Maiolino, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Ferdinando Colella, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Sam Hu, who had two and Oshowy Jordan, Trevor Petersen, Jesse Saban, and Ryan Kruss, who contributed one a piece.

Hamilton forced the Hurricanes goalie Jophrey Gregoire to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

The Red Wings were led by Alex Zaccaria, who registered two goals. Zaccaria scored the first of his two goals at 4:17 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Zaccaria's next tally made the score 2-1 Hamilton with 15:19 left in the first period. Marco Mattina assisted on the tally. Hamilton additionally got points from Corey Caruso, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Nathan Gomes also scored for Hamilton. Other players who recorded assists for Hamilton were Ryan Laufman, who had one and Josh LaFrance, who had two.

Gregoire recorded 28 saves for Newmarket. The Hurricanes registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For Newmarket, Cameron Nicoll was ejected from the game. Hamilton totaled 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. The Red Wings ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Smith was ejected from the game.
