North York hangs on, beats Hamilton 2-1Mountain Arena Mon, Oct 21, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The North York Rangers took the lead against the Hamilton Red Wings in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory. Michael Giacometti provided North York with the game-winning tally when he scored 4:45 into the the first period. The Rangers had gained a power play chance when Josh LaFrance was whistled for checking from behind. Fung Zachary picked up the assist.Hamilton was stymied by North York netminder Gianluca Baggetta, who stopped 26 shots during the victory. Baggetta certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.0 entering the contest. The Red Wings' power play was ineffective against the Rangers' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded. Other players who recorded assists for North York were Alex Leader, Liam Kerins, and Christian Zanetti, who each chipped in one. Hamilton was held below its usual level of production. The Red Wings put an average of 3.8 pucks into the net per game. Hamilton was led by Nathan Gomes, who scored the team's only goal. Gomes scored on the power play 16:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 North York. The Red Wings had taken the advantage when North York's Patrick Simmonds got sent off for interference. Cole Poliziani assisted on the tally. The Rangers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Mark Sinclair rejected 28 shots on goal for Hamilton. The Red Wings incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Hamilton ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and LaFrance was ejected from the game.
