Cobourg downs Whitby in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Cobourg Cougars' Alex D Oliveira scored 4:11 into overtime to beat the Whitby Fury, 5-4 (OT).

Cobourg overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Cougars was down 2-0 after a goal by Whitby's Nick Neal at 3:03 in the second period. Cobourg tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Conner Hogg at 14:08 in the third period.

D Oliveira had two goals and one assist to lead the Cougars. D Oliveira scored the first of his two goals at 10:45 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Taylor Gauld provided the assist. D Oliveira's next tally made the score 5-4 Cobourg with 15:49 left in overtime. Connor Armour assisted on the tally.

The Fury were unable to stop Cobourg from sending pucks towards the net, and the Cougars eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Cobourg's goal total was higher than its season average. The Cougars average 2.6 goals per game. Cobourg got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Cobourg additionally got points from Armour, who also tallied one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Spencer Holt also scored for Cobourg. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Rylee McKinnon, Matt Martin, Kenzie Smith, Stuart King, and Mark MacAulay, who contributed one a piece.

Whitby's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Cobourg power plays.

The Fury were helped by Taylor Best, who racked up one goal. Best scored on the power play 7:39 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. Whitby had taken the advantage when the Cougars' Kieran Milne got sent off for checking from behind. Mike Panowyk provided the assist. Whitby also got points from Greg Milner, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Whitby also got a goal from Tyler Park as well. More assists for Whitby came via Ryan Kirkup, Patrick McAuliffe, Marco Azzano, and Keegan Cairns, who each chipped in one.

Nathan Perry recorded 23 saves for Cobourg. The Cougars ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For Cobourg, Milne was ejected from the game. The Fury's Tyler Feaver stopped 30 shots out of the 35 that he faced. Whitby incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Fury ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Panowyk was ejected from the game.
