Hamilton uses shootout to best Cobourg, 3-2 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Hamilton Red Wings defeated the Cobourg Cougars in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.

Hamilton came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Red Wings fell behind 2-0 after a goal by Cobourg's Mason Marchment at 9:22 in the third period. Hamilton knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Chance MacDonald at 19:50 in the third period.

The Red Wings excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Hamilton's offense rang up 31 shots on the Cougars' net.

Hamilton also got points from Luke Sinclair, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Hamilton were Garnet Batrynchok, Niko Porikos, and Mitch Reid, who each chipped in one.

Cobourg stifled the Red Wings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cougars kept Hamilton's goalie busy throughout the game, and Corey Foster made 42 saves on 44 shots.

Cobourg was helped by Connor Armour, who tallied one goal. Armour scored 4:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cobourg. Alex D Oliveira picked up the assist. More assists for Cobourg came via TJ Melancon, Ryan OGrady, and Chris Turner, who contributed one a piece.

The Red Wings totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Hamilton ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Christiano DiGiacinto was ejected from the game. Mathieu Ouellet made 28 saves for the Cougars on 30 shots. Cobourg incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
