Huge game by Smith boosts Hamilton over Milton, 7-4Mountain Arena Mon, Sep 30, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Matt Smith was all over the ice for the Hamilton Red Wings, as he tallied one goal and three assists in Hamilton's 7-4 win over the Milton Icehawks. Smith got on the board by slotting home a goal 54 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hamilton. Josh LaFrance provided the assist. Smith dished an assist on Nathan Gomes's goal that made the score 2-0 Hamilton at 6:28 into the first period. He then added assists on LaFrance's goal at 18:43 into the first and on Christiano DiGiacinto's goal at 9:54 into the second.The Red Wings forced Icehawks' netminders to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots and forcing 36 saves. Tyler Lewis made 27 stops and Ben Blacker made nine. Hamilton stifled Milton's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Red Wings found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Hamilton averages 4.1 goals per contest. Hamilton additionally got points from LaFrance, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Alex Zaccaria, who also tallied one goal and two assists. Other players who recorded assists for Hamilton were Garnet Batrynchok, Cole Poliziani, Joel Knight, and Liam Bird, who contributed one a piece. The Red Wings were unable to stop the Icehawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Milton eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. The Icehawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game. Milton was helped by Jake Baird, who registered two goals. Baird scored the first of his two goals at 2:04 into the second period to make the score 4-1 Hamilton. Baird's next tally made the score 5-4 Hamilton with 18:15 left in the third period. In addition, Milton received assists from Shane Bennett, who had two and TJ Fergus and Josh Pace, who each chipped in one. Mark Sinclair recorded 28 saves for Hamilton. The Red Wings incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Icehawks registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. For Milton, Tye Campbell was ejected from the game.
