Cobourg holds on for 4-2 win against Whitby

The Cobourg Cougars survived a determined comeback attempt by the Whitby Fury on the way to a 4-2 win.

Cobourg made the score 4-0 on a goal by Spencer Holt at 9:21 in the second period, and Whitby got as close as 4-2 when Troy Oakley scored 4:54 into the third period.

The Cougars' penalty kill excelled, as Cobourg gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

The Cougars did not rack up many penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. Cobourg stayed under its season average of 25.0 penalties minutes per game this season. The Cougars forced the Fury goalie Tyler Feaver to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

Cobourg was helped by Conner Hogg, who grabbed one goal. Hogg scored on the power play 11:52 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Cobourg. The Cougars had gotten the advantage when Whitby's Keegan Cairns was sent off for high sticking. Ryan OGrady provided the assist. Cobourg also got points from OGrady, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Holt, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Cobourg also got a goal from Taylor Gauld as well. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Kieran Milne, who had two and Alex D Oliveira, Chris Turner, and Liam Grande, who each chipped in one.

The Fury racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Whitby had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Fury's offense rang up 31 shots on Cobourg's net.

Henry Thompson also scored for Whitby. More assists for Whitby came via Adam Clements, Taylor Best, and Jeremy Wu, who contributed one a piece.

Nathan Perry recorded 29 saves for the Cougars. Cobourg registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Cougars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Martin was ejected from the game. Feaver rejected 29 shots on goal for Whitby. For the Fury, Tyler Park was ejected from the game.
