Stouffville rolls over Newmarket, 7-1

The Stouffville Spirit were firing on all cylinders against the Newmarket Hurricanes, and when the final buzzer sounded Spirit emerged with a 7-1 win.

Stouffville was led by goalie Daniel Mannella, who finished with 30 saves while allowing one goal. Mannella managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.03 prior to the game.

The Spirit were sparked by Matthew Dunlop, who grabbed one goal. Dunlop scored 17:08 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Stouffville. Dakota Redshaw picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:13 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Stouffville made Hurricanes' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 39 shots and forcing 32 saves. Jake Danson made 24 stops and Jophrey Gregoire made eight. The Spirit excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Stouffville outdid its season average for goals scored. The Spirit have scored at the pace of 4.5 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Stouffville were also effective in Newmarket's zone, and came away with two goals.

Stouffville also got points from Peyton Backus, who also had one goal and one assist, Robert Powers, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Joseph Deveny, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Liam ODette also scored for Stouffville. More assists for Stouffville came via Matthew Heffernan, Connor Miller, Spencer Roberts, and Kyler Challis, who each chipped in one and Michael Carcone and Chad Burrows, who contributed two a piece.

The Hurricanes were often in penalty trouble, totaling 12 minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. Newmarket had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Hurricanes did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Newmarket puts an average of 5.2 pucks into the net per game. The Spirit were unable to stop the Hurricanes from sending pucks towards the net, and Newmarket eventually piled up 31 shots on goal.

The Hurricanes were led by Matt Marsden, who scored the team's only goal. Marsden scored 7:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Newmarket. Anthony Trujillo assisted on the tally.

Stouffville totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 3-for-13 on the power play. For the Spirit, Roberts was ejected from the game. Newmarket ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Shaquille Hickey was ejected from the game.
