Nepean vanquishes Cumberland in shootout, 3-2 (1-0 SO)Navan Memorial Centre Fri, Feb 28, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Nepean Raiders defeated the Cumberland Grads in a shootout 3-2 (1-0 SO). The shootout lasted for eight attempts between the teams.Nepean saw a two-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. The Raiders made the score 2-0 on a goal by Mitchell Herlihey at 1:59 in the third period. Cumberland evened things up at 2-2 on a goal by Travis Douglas at 19:10 in the third period. Nepean's penalty kill excelled, as the Raiders gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays. Keenan Hodgson also scored for Nepean. The Grads put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Nepean to score on any of its five power plays. Cumberland forced the Raiders goalie Brett Magnus to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The Grads were helped by Maxime St.Pierre, who had one goal. St.Pierre scored on the power play 7:20 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Nepean. Cumberland had gotten the advantage when Nepean's Jody Sullivan was sent off for boarding. Bruno Cheff provided the assist. More assists for Cumberland came via Mark Golberg, who had one and David Bennett, who had two. The Raiders' Magnus stopped 43 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Nepean ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. For the Raiders, Sullivan was ejected from the game. Kevin Gollmer rejected 26 shots on goal for the Grads. Cumberland ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. The Grads ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dylan McDonald was ejected from the game.
