McCartney's hat trick boosts Smiths Falls over Cumberland, 7-2

Karson McCartney lifted the Smiths Falls Bears to a 7-2 victory with a hat trick against the Cumberland Grads.

McCartney's first goal came 3:55 into the first period. He then added goals at 1:40 into the second and at 3:39 into the second.

Smiths Falls led by only one goal at the end of the first period, but put the game away by scoring four goals in the second.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 9:11 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Bears forced Grads' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, firing 48 shots and forcing 41 saves. Reilly Turner made 11 stops and Kevin Gollmer made 30. Smiths Falls stifled Cumberland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bears bested their season scoring average. Smiths Falls averages 3.5 goals per game.

Smiths Falls additionally got points from Victor Beaulac, who also registered one goal and one assist and Stefano Momesso, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Neil Doef also scored for Smiths Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Domenic Camastra, who had two and Alek Deblois, Yannick Crete, Chris MacMillan, Brandon Lesway, and Michael McKenney, who contributed one a piece.

The the Grads penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Cumberland surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Grads were led by Travis Douglas, who finished with one goal and one assist. Douglas scored 10:52 into the third period to make the score 5-2 Smiths Falls. Matthew Dupont assisted on the tally. Cumberland also got a goal from Mark Golberg as well. More assists for Cumberland came via Tielen Celentano, who had one.

Michael Pinios made 26 saves for the Bears on 28 shots. Smiths Falls totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Team's Darius Gibson and Nicolas Coates were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Cumberland registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. For the Grads, David Bennett and Brandon Zullo were ejected from the contest.
