Cumberland holds on for 2-1 win against HawkesburyNavan Memorial Centre Sun, Oct 06, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Hawkesbury Hawks tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Cumberland Grads would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 2-1. A goal by Riley Hennigar put Cumberland up 2-0 in the second period, but Hawkesbury pulled to within one on Jacob Soyka's tally 8:54 into the third period. The Hawks were stymied by the Grads netminder Reilly Turner, who stopped 43 shots during the victory. Turner certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.38 entering the contest. Cumberland stifled Hawkesbury's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Grads kept the Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Guillaume Therien made 32 saves on 34 shots. Mark Golberg also scored for Cumberland. In addition, Cumberland received assists from Bobby Williams, Brandon Grillo, Travis Douglas, and Matthew Morin, who each chipped in one. Hawkesbury forced Cumberland goalie Turner to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots. Other players who recorded assists for Hawkesbury were Damien Charette and Justin Villeneuve, who contributed one a piece. The Grads totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play. For Cumberland, Golberg was ejected from the game. The Hawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
