Carleton Place wins tough contest against Hawkesbury, 3-2

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Carleton Place Canadians escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Hawkesbury Hawks.

Carleton Place gained the winning advantage on a goal by Joey Laird 17:03 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

The Canadians were led by Laird, who racked up one goal.

Carleton Place forced Hawkesbury goalie Guillaume Therien to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

Brett DAndrea also scored for Carleton Place. Other players who recorded assists for Carleton Place were Kelly Summers, who had two and Larry Smith, Elias Ghantous, Devin Campbell, and Andy Sturtz, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks were helped by Francois Lemelin, who tallied one goal. Lemelin scored on the power play 7:02 into the third period to make the score 2-2. A too many men penalty on Sturtz had put Hawkesbury on the power play. Andrew Reis picked up the assist. Hawkesbury also got a goal from Francis Landers as well. More assists for Hawkesbury came via David Higgs, Daniel Brickley, and Carl Faucher, who contributed one a piece.

The Canadians' Cory Simic stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Carleton Place incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Therien rejected 40 shots on goal for the Hawks. Hawkesbury incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
