Gloucester beats Smiths Falls 7-6 after comeback scare

The Smiths Falls Bears tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Gloucester Rangers held on for a 7-6 victory.

Gloucester made the score 6-2 on a goal by Nicholas Brazeau at 16:08 in the second period, and Smiths Falls got as close as 7-6 when Nic Marchand scored 18:52 into the third period.

Maximian Veronneau was all over the ice for the Rangers, as he tallied two goals and two assists in the win. Veronneau scored the first of his two goals at 5:37 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matt Rosebrook picked up the assist. Veronneau's next tally made the score 2-1 Gloucester with 6:26 left in the first period. Rosebrook provided the assist.

Gloucester forced Bears' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 41 shots and forcing 34 saves. Michael Pinios made 25 stops and Nicholas Hodgins made nine. The Rangers surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Gloucester has scored at the pace of 3.1 goals per game during the current campaign.

Gloucester additionally got points from Matt Foget, who also had one goal and one assist and Brazeau, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Gloucester included Ethon MacLean, who had one and Ryan Kuffner, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Gloucester were Colton Keuhl, who had two and Miguel Laurin, Luc Deschamps, and Zak Salloum, who each chipped in one.

The Bears forced the Rangers goalie Danick Boisvert to work between the pipes, taking 39 shots. Smiths Falls found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Bears average 3.2 goals per contest. Smiths Falls struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 24 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

The Bears were helped by Victor Beaulac, who registered one goal and one assist. Beaulac scored 3:21 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Gloucester. Stefano Momesso picked up the assist. Smiths Falls also got points from Yannick Crete, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Marchand, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Smiths Falls also had goals scored by Alek Deblois, who had one and Neil Doef, who had two. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Karson McCartney, who had two, Ben Beasley, who had three, and Sebastien Barrette and Brett Costello, who contributed one a piece.

Boisvert rejected 33 shots on goal for Gloucester. The Rangers incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Smiths Falls registered two goals on five power play opportunities.
