Cumberland wins tough contest against Pembroke, 5-4

The Cumberland Grads gutted out a close 5-4 win against the Pembroke Lumber Kings.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Mark Golberg's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Golberg was all over the ice for Cumberland, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win. Golberg scored on the power play 17:40 into the second period to make the score 5-4 Cumberland. The Grads had gained a power play chance when T Beveridge was whistled for checking from behind. Tyler Pancel assisted on the tally.

Pembroke was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as Cumberland was able to score four times while on the power play.

The Grads made Lumber Kings' goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, firing 41 shots and forcing 36 saves. Nate Skidmore made 27 stops and Darren Smith made nine. Cumberland stifled the Lumber Kings' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Cumberland additionally got points from Travis Douglas, who also finished with two goals and one assist. Cumberland also got a goal from Matthew Dupont as well. In addition, Cumberland received assists from Bobby Williams and Colin Kruse, who contributed two a piece.

Pembroke kept the Grads' goalie busy throughout the game, and Reilly Turner made 41 saves on 45 shots.

The Lumber Kings were helped by Mac MacSorley, who grabbed two goals. MacSorley scored the first of his two goals at 11:19 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Patrice Wren picked up the assist. MacSorley's next tally made the score 4-3 Cumberland with 9:07 left in the second period. Jordan Larson provided the assist. Pembroke also got points from Mark Petaccio, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Felix Chamberland, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Pembroke were Liam Biard, who had one and Darcy Haines, who had two.

Cumberland incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Pembroke incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. For the Lumber Kings, Beveridge was ejected from the game.
